What is Stop the Bleed®?
Uncontrolled bleeding is the leading cause of preventable death from trauma. The Stop the Bleed campaign—developed by the American College of Surgeons and national emergency health partners—trains non-medical bystanders to step in and take life-saving action during severe accidents, natural disasters, or unexpected crises.
A person can bleed to death in as little as three minutes. Because emergency responders take time to arrive, immediate action by someone on the scene is often the difference between life and death.
What You Will Learn
Through simple, practical training, participants learn three primary skills to stop life-threatening hemorrhage:
Direct Pressure: How to locate the source of bleeding and apply firm, continuous pressure.
Wound Packing: Techniques for using gauze or clean cloth to pack deep wounds where pressure alone isn’t enough.
Tourniquet Application: How to properly place, tighten, and secure a commercial tourniquet on severe limb injuries.
